Neoprene vs. Mohair “The Great Girth Debate”

Everyone knows when you have more than one horse person in a conversation you will have more than one opinion. When it comes to girths, the opinions are as varied as the folks using them. Each of these girths has benefits of their own, but there are things to consider when buying your next girth.

Depending on your personal preference, what accommodates your horse, and the type of riding you are doing; neoprene and mohair are the two most popular types of girths. There are a multitude of other types of girths (fleece, felt, cotton, rayon, and blends) for your consideration, but these two are the most popular.

As stated before, both types of girths have their own specific benefits. Neoprene girths are made of closed cell rubber. Therefore, they have no absorption power. This is a big benefit in humid areas, or when you intend to ride multiple days in a row. Being a closed cell rubber, this makes it very easy to keep this girth clean and sanitary. The rubber is stretched and sewn around a nylon webbing core. This provides a very sturdy foundation for the girth.

The nylon core prevents the girth from stretching, so it stays true to its size. The most important things to remember when considering a neoprene girth are:

  1. Most rubber is petroleum based, which could possibly irritate some horses skin.
  2. Having a nylon core; we recommend using leather tie straps and off billets. This way something gives as your horses chest expands and contracts.

Mohair is made out of woven Angora goat hair. This being a natural fiber, it wicks away heat and perspiration very well. Since it is a natural fiber, it will have a tendency to stretch. Therefore, nylon tie straps and off billets are safe to use because the girth has the ability to give as the horse moves. Being a “stranded” girth, it will absorb sweat and potentially trap debris. It is very important to allow this type girth to “air” out, and needs to be washed frequently using a mild detergent such as Woolite. I never recommend machine washing your girths, as it can cause them to come apart.

No matter which you choose, remember to keep them clean and check them often. Ride on!
