All About Wine

The Joy of Evil

I spent the Fourth of July weekend with family and during the course of celebrating, cracked open a bottle of what’s quickly becoming one of my favorite wine varietal — Pure Evil from Australia.

Summertime is the time to enjoy a chilled bottle of white wine on the deck and the the 2005 Pure Evil Chardonnay is one that will just knock you over with its nose and taste. It brings with it the aromas of baked apples, pears grilled on the barbecue along with an intense butterscotch flavor, too.

It has a rich, golden color that is as wonderful to look at as it is to drink. Even the bottle, with the word EVIL placed upside down on the label, makes it a one of a kind wine to see and drink.

The entire line of Pure Evil wines are available at the Diamond Ridge Market and I would recommend a bottle or two to enjoy this week.

The Evil Cabernet Sauvignon is outstanding, too and my favorite. Filled with the tastes of plums and berries, the dry wine had a big spicy finish along with hints of tobacco.

On another note, the Hermann, Mo., Very Berry Wine Trail is coming up this month. I’ve been on it and it’s a kick for Missouri wine lovers.

For $25, you visit seven wineries where you will sample wine and eat dishes prepared with a variety of berries, everything from berry desserts with ice cream to salads with berry dressings. You also get a souvenir wine glass as a keepsake.

The event is July 26-27. A limited number of tickets are available. Tickets may be purchased online at www.hermannmo.info.
