All About Wine

Wines to Picnic With

Warmer days are ahead which makes one think about picnics in the park and grilling on the deck. Here are some wines that will suit almost any occasion and make them a unique wine experience.

2005 Earthquake Syrah
This 15.5 percent alcohol wine is a monster! A blend of three Phillips family vineyards, the Earthquake Syrah is not for the faint of heart. Candied vanilla, blackberries, earth, and a myriad of spices on the palate. Earthquakes full-bodied Syrah has elegantly pronounced tannins with a looong silky finish.

2006 K Vintners “Morrison Lane” Syrah
This wine comes from Charles Smith, a top 10 syrah producer in the world. If you like Syrahs you’re going to love this one. Dark earth, game, undergrowth saturating. The nose has lots of dark fruit; cherry fruit roll-ups with a massive taste that is big and bold. This will benefit from cellaring for sure. It’s jammy without being thick with nice sweet and delicious tannins.

2004 Ojai Vineyard Syrah
This wine earns 94 points from Robert Parker. Ojai owner/winemaker. This is an extremely rare release of this wonderful wine. The stunningly full-bodied, rich, opulent, ripe 2004 Syrah Roll Ranch offers lovely aromas of melted licorice, crème de cassis, blackberries, violets, and underbrush. It is deep, full-bodied and velvety-textured.

2005 Volver Tempranillo
For those who love Paso a Paso, this is his big brother with a 90-point Robert Parker rating. Ruby in color with hints of smoke, tobacco, and black cherry on the nose. Lush mouthfeel with flavors of currant and cherry and elegant finish.

2008 Saracco Moscato d’ Asti Italy
Moscato d’ Asti is a unique wine where the beautiful aromas of the grapes are enhanced by a crisp, nice acidity, a light fizziness and the sweetness of the natural residual sugar. The low alcohol content makes this wine a very easy, pleasant wine – perfect for finishing a meal with dessert or without food as a nice mid-day break.

2006 Ledgewood Creek Three Clone Chardonnay
Aged over nine months in a combination of American and French oak barrels, and produced from the best three of the five types (clones) of Chardonnay grapes grown on the Estate. This wine pairs well with stronger fish such as salmon, pork ribs, and cream pastas such as Fettuccine Alfredo.
