Ask the Experts: Suede Saddle Care

QUESTION

I was just reading your article Basic Saddle Care and Maintenance. I have a hand made saddle that is entirely suede, how can I clean it without making it turn dark?

-Kathy

ANSWER

That’s a great question, Kathy. We have a lot of beautiful suede saddles at the store, but they definitely take a different kind of care an attention to keep them looking sharp.

First of all, I would recommend using a brass bristled suede brush. This particular brush is just $3.99 at pfiwestern.com.

If you use any kind of crème or cleaner, it will usually mat the nap of the leather down. If its rough out or the flesh side of smooth leather; you can use a suede brush and a product called Bick 4.

Bick 4 is a crème conditioner that you can use on any leather and it will not cause it to darken. You can get a 16 oz. bottle for $9.99 at pfiwestern.com.

There you have it, Kathy! Thanks for writing! I hope I could help.

Ride On,

Josh
