Here’s to Missouri’s Wines

We are talking about Missouri wines in this week’s e-newsletter and I hope you enjoy some of the wines being made for us at Diamond Ridge from St. James Winery. We just got back from enjoying two days of wine tasting in the Hermann, MO area at the annual berry trail event. Seven wineries participate and offer items made with berries along with the appropriate wine pairing.

As is the case, many of the wineries offered Vignoles as the paired wine. I have a feeling and I got some opinions from the winemakers in Hermman that Vignoles maybe the grape and wine that brings Missouri’s wines to the forefront nationally. It’s a great white grape that’s very versatile and makes a terrific wine.

I still love the reds made from Norton. St. Vincent and Chambourcin. Some of the winemakers are blending these full-bodied reds and are coming up with some terrific wines. We have some great desserts from a nice light salad at Bias Winery to an enormous blueberry muffin with lemon glaze the side of a softball at the Hermannhof Winery.

The only drawback was the weather. An oppressive heat dampened a lot of spirits and made getting in and out of a hot car quite the ordeal. Don’t wait for a special event to head to Hermann. Anytime is a good time to go there or to any of the other winery areas in the state. For locations and more information, go to www.missouriwine.org.

Speaking of Missouri wines, a new coffee-table size book on Missouri wines is coming off the presses. It’s a beautiful book that any Missouri wine lover will want to own. The book is called: “A Tour of Missouri Wineries,” and is co-authored by Jonathan Eccher, a native of Springfield, and Jeremy Hollingshead of Joplin. The book will be on sale Aug. 15 at an event at PFI’s Diamond Ridge Market. It will be sold at a Missouri wine tasting that night with proceeds from the tasting going to the Children’s Miracle Network. Several wineries will be at the event along with the book’s authors.

LAST CALL! The first meeting of the Diamond Ridge Wine Club is Thursday at 6 p.m. Call to reserve your seat. The first meeting is free. We will sample wine and other goodies and talk about your wine likes, dislikes and questions. To make a reservation, call Diamond Ridge Market: 1-800-222-4734
