All About Wine

Take a trip down south!

There’s something going on in the search for great wines and it’s this – South America is where it’s at. This weekend, I came across a great wine from Argentina that I would recommend to everyone looking for the big red wine that they want with a steak, lamb or exotic meat like elk or buffalo.

Juan Benegas 2006 Malbec

Juan Benegas 2006 Malbec

The Juan Benegas 2006 Malbec is a tremendous wine that its nearly beyond description. This varietal a 100% Malbec was produced out of specially selected vineyards from the province of Mendoza in Argentina. These vineyards, located on the Andes slopes mountains, are blessed with an exceptional climate and soil that allows the production of a unique wine, with a typical Argentine character.

According to the winery, the deep red color has a hint of violent in it. The aroma is primarily red fruit and floral aromas. There are also waves of cherries and mature blackberries present. The taste is intense and stays in the mouth and throat long after you have swallowed. There are sweet tannins with no drying effects. This wine will get better with age. It’s recommended that the wine be served no warmer than 62 degrees.

I also wanted to remind you all of a big event at the Diamond Ridge Market next week. Estate Publishers Limited, a Missouri publishing company with Springfield ties, is teaming up with Children’s Miracle Network, PFI Western Store’s Diamond Ridge Market, and a number of Missouri wineries to celebrate the release of its newest coffee-table book, A Tour of Missouri Wineries, with a charity wine tasting and book signing in Springfield, featuring author of the book Jonathan Eccher.

The event, which is open to the public and requires no advance reservation, will take place on Aug. 15th, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Unlimited wine tasting of such popular Missouri wines as those from Mount Pleasant Winery, Saint James Winery, and Stone Hill Winery, each of which is featured in A Tour of Missouri Wineries, a $5.00-per-book discount on all purchases of the book, which author and Springfield-resident Jonathan Eccher will be available at the event to sign, and the opportunity to meet and talk to owners, winemakers, and representatives from wineries throughout the state is included in the $5.00 admission fee.

In addition, all admission fee proceeds will be donated to Children’s Miracle Network to provide state-of-the-art care, life-saving research, and preventative education for children in the Springfield area.
