We had a great time at Thursday’s Diamond Market Wine Club meeting. We drank some great wine and even tried pairing Halloween candy with some of the red wines along with apples and caramel with some whites.
By the time we got deep into the tastings, we really didn’t care what candy was being eaten with what wine but everyone had a great time.
One of the wines we tried after all the samples were gone was a new wine I hadn’t tried before: Mo Zin from Sonoma County.
Called that because it’s mostly Zinfandel, it’s a great tasting, deep red wine. It’s a blend of 52% zinfandel, 35% mourvèdre, 8% carignan 3% petite syrah and 2% syrah.
This Rhone-inspired wine was made to be immediately enjoyable but will also improve and gain complexity in the bottle for 5 to 8 years after the vintage date. Part of the reason mourvèdre is used is for its anti-oxidant properties that give long life to these wines. As it ages more of the leathery/raspberry notes from the mourvèdre will appear.
It has a food-friendly, graceful balance between fruit and oak and matches well with everything from grilled ahi tuna to Italian red sauce dishes to lamb and red meats.
You ought to give it a try. It is available now at the Diamond Ridge Market.
