We will be trying a number of great white wines and several terrific reds. Here’s a look at some wine we will be tasting this week.
2007 La Vieille Ferme
The vineyard lies to the east of the southern tip of the Côtes du Rhône appellation, near the town of Villes-sur-Auzon, at the foot of the Mont-Ventoux and the hills that extend to Sault. The wine is a blend of 50 percent Cinsault, 40 percent Grenache and 10 percent Syrah. The grapes are hand-picked, lightly crushed and put in stainless steel vats. The wine is kept entirely in stainless steel, and is fined with bentonite. The color is a lovely deep pink hue that offers flavors of caramel and toffee.
2007 Man Vintners Pinotage
This wine is packed with full red-berry flavours, touches of cinnamon and nutmeg spices and soft tannins and is a blend of 86 percent Pinotage, 12 percent Shiraz and 2 percent Viognier. It is an ideal match for spicy curries.
2006 Vieux Chateau Saint Andre
Soft ripe fruit fills the palate with well-defined tannins in perfect balance with the fruit. There are inviting aromas of black cherries and plums with a toasty vanillin edge. It is a blend of 75 percent Merlot, 20 percent Cabernet Franc and 5 percent Cabernet Sauvignon.
2006 Chelsea Goldshmidt Merlot, Dry Creek Valley
This wine has earned a 90 point rating from Wine Enthusiast. The wine offers fresh black raspberry and toasty vanilla aromas, with cherry, anise and spicy cedar flavors that finish with slightly dry tannins.
2006 Rosenblum Cellars Petite Sirah “Heritage Clones”
This wine exhibits great color with a bouquet and flavors of ripe blackberries, plums, chocolate, black pepper, violets and spice. This wine is amazing both in aromatics and flavors, not to mention the color, which is jet black. The perfect wine for hearty fare such as mixed sausage ragu, barbecue smoked prime rib, leg of lamb on a bed of thyme, or a good old-fashioned pot roast.
